"Tell Me It's Over" is the fourth track and the second single from Avril Lavigne's sixth studio album, Head Above Water (2019). It was released on December 12, 2018 along with album's pre-order.[1][2]

Background[]

Lavigne posted the cover art and announced the release date on her social media on December 5.[2] She had previously posted pictures from the video accompanied by the line "Cause it don't feel like it's over whenever you're closing the door".[2]

Lavigne explained in a statement that the song is about "being strong, finally putting your foot down and closing the door on a relationship that you know is wrong after time and time again of falling for their games." About her inspirations to write the song, Lavigne said:

The vocals and the lyrics are very vulnerable which is reflective of the feelings I had in relationships like these. I wanted to write something classic and have been inspired by some of the timeless queens I listen to everyday at home, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin and Etta James.[3]

Music video[]

The song's accompanying music video premiered on December 12, 2018, on Lavigne's YouTube channel. It was directed by Erica Silverman. It finds Lavigne sharing a love-filled Christmas with her boyfriend before things start to fall apart and he smashes her phone on the ground amid another fight.[3]

Lyrics[]

[Verse 1]
I ain't playing no games
'Cause I've got nothing left to lose
I'm so tired of circular motions
They leave me dizzy and confused
My heart, oh no, is not your revolving door
I get stuck spinning and spinning and spinning
Oh, 'til I collapse on the floor

[Pre-Chorus]
But every time that you touch me
I forget what we're fighting about
Oh, you come and you leave
Shame on me for believing every word out of your mouth

[Chorus]
Tell me it's over if it's really over
'Cause it don't feel like it's over
Whenever you're closing the door, no
So tell me it's over

[Verse 2]
Darling, you
Oh, you taste so bittersweet
Can't get you off of my lips
You're dangerous when you take me like a thief

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, and I
I should let this go
I try and I try, I try
But why, why won't you leave me alone?

[Chorus]
Tell me it's over if it's really over
'Cause it don't feel like it's over
Whenever you're closing the door, no
So tell me it's over if it's really over
'Cause every time you come over
It doesn't feel over no more
So tell me it's over

[Bridge]
I keep on leaving the light on
Hoping to find something else, oh
I've played the fool for the last time
I just can't do this myself

[Chorus]
Tell me it's over if it's really over
'Cause it don't feel like it's over
Whenever you're closing the door, no
Tell me it's over if it's really over
'Cause every time you come over
It doesn't feel over no more
So tell me it's over
