Knockin' on Heaven's Door is a song written and sung by Bob Dylan for the soundtrack of the 1973 film Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. Avril Lavigne covered this song. The cover version was featured on the bonus CD of her My World video release in 2003, as one of the B-Sides from her single Nobody's Home and afterwards as a Japanese bonus track for her 2011 album Goodbye Lullaby.
Background
In the film, the song plays after Sheriff Colin Baker, an ally of Pat Garrett portrayed by Slim Pickens, is mortally wounded in a shootout with Billy the Kid’s gang. Baker and his wife are by a riverside, preparing themselves for his death, which is not actually shown onscreen.
This song was included by the Western Writers as one of their Top 100 Western Songs of All Time.[1]
Lyrics
Mama, take this badge off of me
I can’t use it anymore
It’s getting dark, too dark to see
I feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Just like so many times before
Mama, put my guns in the ground
I can’t shoot them anymore
That long black cloud is coming down
I feel I’m knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Just like so many times before
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Knock, knock, knocking on heaven’s door
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
Just like so many times before
